I’m sitting at my desk, which is littered with a ton of stuff, as usual. I like to be organized and tidy, but my desktop has become the family “lost and found” and until we designate another spot, it will continue to house art projects, a lonely estranged earring, coupons, business cards, books I have half read (Prophet, by Frank Peretti and Velvet Elvis, by Rob Bell), half a can of diet cherry pepsi (lunch), half a plate of sugar cookies (after lunch) and a cup of coffee (now). We’ll see if I can finish that as I write here.
I am not very good at finishing things. Since I was very young I have had big dreams. Big passions. Big appetites. I seem built for casting a vision and creatively strategizing, but somewhere in the middle of the doing, the winds always blow a different direction and I get distracted. I am learning that this is part of my personality and strength set. (Strategic, Command, Communication, Activator, Focus) But something else I am learning is that God is a darn good finisher.
Prior to now, my life has been littered much like this desk with lots of dog-eared pages and sticky-noted ideas and expired coupons for life. But if there is anything I gained through the refining fire, it was focus. The hot pressure and intensity burned away all of the insignificant details and all of the selfish distractions and left only the truth. The truth about me. The truth about God. And the truth about what He was calling me to. Some days it is a delicate and beautiful dance of grace between a groom and bride. Other days it is a fierce and stormy battle as I cling to Him and He fights for me. But at the end of the day, I am learning to run full-steam into Jesus and just trust God to open the doors ahead and to tie up the loose ends behind.
Today is a big day. If you read this blog, you’ll understand why. Here are some updates:
Financial Provision: In the last two weeks we have received $4,340.00 in donations, even having one family tithe toward our ministry at God’s leading. We also had some supernatural components come together today on the selling of our house and now we are set to close on Thursday. After having it on the market across state lines for six months we are more than relieved to release it to a new family! Phew!
Music/Ministry Direction: Our four shows recently really clarified where God was defining the sphere of this ministry. That abrupt realization is recorded here, and although a door slammed on your nose is hard to accept, it also cannot be denied, and for that we are thankful. We are continuing to pursue bookings with camps, conferences, churches and colleges and pray that God will “bless the work of our hands”. Plus, today our music was officially released on iTunes and Amazon. It feels a little more real now.
Housing/Cars: Dan was given next Monday off, so he will be able to take care at least two of the cars legalities. And then we can sell one of them which will replenish our finances as well. PLUS, with the selling of our VA house, we will begin looking into alternatives for our TN housing. Options always supercede a lack of options.
Parenting: Still a day at a time, but with the warming weather (today excluded) we are finding opportunities to get out and have fun with the children. Even the strongest bridges are still built one piece at a time.
Influence: I have been SO excited to brag on God lately. I am in continuous prayer over some specific people who I am growing to love and I anxiously await the look on their face as they are invited into their own dance of grace. And for the seeds that are beginning to break through the soil, I am privileged to contribute even a drop of water. (or Starbucks coffee, as it were!)
I am so thankful for the One with whom I have to do. That His calling is irrevocable. That He is faithful when I am faithless. That He promises to finish the work that He starts. ‘Cause I’ll be good if I finish up this cup of coffee. The sugar cookies are gone now though.
Sailor,
You took the time to respond to my blog today and I was encouraged. Thank you! As I snooped around yours, I noticed right away that you’re in the midst of reading Velvet Elvis– a fantastic book! It sounds like your life is pretty busy and exciting [congrats on getting your book published!! WOW! My dream!], but in the quiet moments when you’re able to really think big and new thoughts about God, try to finish the book. I just gave the audio copy to my brother, along with prayers that he would allow his heart to be captivated by Jesus. I’ll check back in with you…may your ministry be blessed by God’s faithfulness and provision in every way. Jane
